4th East Asia Top Level Officials' Meeting on Competition Policy
Post-event Statement
The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) co-organized, with the Japan FairTrade Commission (JFTC), the 4th East Asia Top Level Officials' Meeting onCompetition Policy in Kyoto, Japan on 16 April 2008. About 40 senior officials from 14 East Asian competition and related authorities/agencies participated in the meeting. The meeting discussed recent development of competition law and policy in the Republic of Korea; Taipei,China; and Singapore as well as the need for a more harmonized competition regime and regional technical assistance program to facilitate the development of competition policies in ASEAN countries as targeted by the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint. In addition, a Task-Force of Technical Assistance (TA) on Competition Policy in East Asia was set up to promote effectiveness of technical assistance through exchange of information (on TA inventory and calendar) and close coordination among donors and between donors and recipients of the TAs. Members of the Technical Assistance Task-force are the persons in charge of technical assistance in each related agency. Calendar of events for TA activities in East Asia for 2008 and an inventory of TAs for each country were also distributed. Background
The Top Level Officials' Meeting on Competition Policy aims to strengthen the cooperative relationship among competition authorities/competition related authorities in the East Asian region through frank exchange of views and information among their top level officials. The 1st meeting was held in Bogor, Indonesia in May 2005, the 2nd meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand in June 2006, and the 3rd meeting was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam in May 2007. This year, fourteen authorities from East Asian countries participated in the meeting.
Objectives
The 4th Top Level Officials' Meeting focused on two themes: - Recent developments of competition law and policy in East Asia
- Technical assistance activities in the East Asian region and their coordination and cooperation
Outputs
- Enhanced understanding of competition law and policy in East Asia
- Strengthened networking among East Asian competition and related agencies
- Better coordination of technical assistance on competition policy through the Taskforce of TA on competition policy in East Asia.
