Applying Results-based Management to Sector Management

The 'sector' is the typical structure within which governments manage contributions to the economy and services to the people. One approach to categorizing sectors and their contributions is the:

  • economic or 'productive' sectors such as agriculture, industry, tourism etc,
  • social sectors which contribute to quality of life such as education and health, and
  • supporting or service sectors such as utilities, infrastructure, finance.

Managing 'results' within a sector becomes critical with regard to the relative contributions of the sector to the economy.

Given that typically a number of parties, both public and private, contribute to a sector, it is necessary to apply a systematic approach to the sector's management. Applying results-based management to a sector is therefore of major potential benefit to the efficient and effective functioning of a sector.
