Bank Ownership and Governance Quality in Four Post-Crisis Asian Economies
This paper analyzes recent corporate governance structures and the performance of 59 banks in four Asian economies heavily impacted by
the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis.
It has been found that banks with concentrated control in the hands of family or the state - unlike widely-held or foreigner-controlled banks - tend
to have more western-style boards and other governance structures. The authors find no significant relationship between bank performance or efficiency
and governance structures, although they do find that relationship in a few sub-samples.
