Microfinance and Poverty: The Japanese Experiences
This presentation provides perspective on the role of microfinance in poverty reduction through an examination of the historical development of microfinance in Japan. Various mechanisms developed in the early twentieth century to serve small farmers and others without access to formal finance, including industrial associations, cooperative financial institutions and ROSCAs. Using these examples, the implications of finance for poverty reduction are discussed.
