Regional Infrastructure Network Development & Trade & Transport Facilitation in Asia
Ms. Karandawala prefaced her presentation with a short discussion of the political situation in Southeast Asia. She said that with the breaking of the political/ economic barriers, regional economies have become interdependent leading to the upgrading of the efficiency of linkages between countries. The development of the Asian Highway Network and the Trans-Asian Railway Network led to the advancement of the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development project (ALTID) which dealt largely with Transport Facilitation. The ALTID route selection criteria, including capital-to-capital links, connections to major sea, river and air ports, and connections to tourism attractions were discussed.
