JICA Research on Cross-border Transport Infrastructure

JICA Research on Cross-border Transport Infrastructure Focusing on the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), this study aims to:

  1. analyze and review the current status of regionalization and cross-border transport Infrastructure (CBTI) development and identify the issues and problems in GMS,
  2. to examine the future vision of CBTI development for the GMS and the future direction for JICA assistance and CBTI-related programs, and
  3. to examine the applicability of the results for other regions.

This study firstly tackled the present conditions regarding regionalization and CBTI development in GMS. Ms. Kaneko presented the socio-conditions and trade statistics in GMS countries, as well as import-export data of CLMV countries. She then discussed the general framework for CBTI in the ASEAN Highway Network, ASEAN ports, international and domestic airports as well as cross-border points. Land and sea transportation between Hanoi and Bangkok was compared and it showed that it cost more to use sea transport, although it took less time because of all the delays at the land borders. She showed an outline of a CBTI agreement as well as proposed regional development at the borders.
