Who can apply?

Nationals from most ADB developing member countries in the Asia-Pacific region are eligible. To ensure that there is a strong emphasis on issues relating to development in countries that are regular ADB borrowers, we have prepared a list of eligible developing countries (82KB PDF). The list includes larger countries such as PRC, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Viet Nam, as well as many other developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

I would like to enter some articles that seem to cover several of the award categories? Which category should I specify?

Choose the category that seems most suitable. Or check two boxes if you wish.

It is true that some articles will inevitably cover several fields. The judges will bear this in mind when they consider the awards.

How can I enter an application for the Special Prizes category?

If you would like your article to be considered for one of the six theme categories AND for a special prize as well, please indicate which of the special prize categories you are applying for. You may enter for two special prizes if you wish. In addition, the judges will also consider the awards for the special prizes and may make an award for an outstanding article even if the applicant has not applied for a special prize.

You could also just apply for a special prize if you wish, such as the Islands Journalist Award.

Why has ADBI restricted participation to journalists from developing countries only?

The awards are focused on journalists from developing countries in recognition of the fact that journalists in these countries often face special difficulties that do not exist in developed countries. It is thus frequently hard for journalists from developing countries to compete on a level playing field with colleagues from developed countries or from the better-known and better-financed international media organisations.

Are the awards available to TV and radio journalists, or only to print and online journalists?

During the first year of the scheme (2004), awards are restricted to entries from print and online media only.

Later, consideration will be given to expanding the program to include other types of media.
