Corporate Governance in Banking and Economic Performance - Future Options for People’s Republic of China

The problems faced by PRC’s banking sector, with relatively high levels of non-performing loans, are well known. This paper argues that genuine improvement of the banking sector requires a major change in corporate governance of PRC’s major banks. The problem is less one of public ownership per se, than of the need to ensure that a plurality of interests are represented on bank boards, through ownership diversification. The paper points to the emergence of a new generation of diversified ownership banks and to their superior governance and performance.
