Sharing the Fruit of Forestry Products: Indigenous People and Their Incomes in the Forestry Sector in East Kalimantan, Indonesia

This study examines the impact of economic development in forestry on the indigenous people who have traditionally lived in and obtained their livelihood from the forest. It takes villages in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, as a case study and considers how the recent decentralization policy has impacted the lives of villagers from the Dayak community. The study is based on an original survey of 50 villagers and reveals how their lives have been affected by the recent policy changes.

It concludes that there has been modest progress: the Dayak are now more involved in the development of forest-related products with a shift away from traditional hunting and gathering. Concerns remain, however, over the risk of over-exploitation of forests and over the way that the decentralization policy is being implemented.
