Governance in Indonesia: Some Comments

This paper was prepared for a seminar on "Towards a New Indonesia" in the Faculty of Economics, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 16-17 September 2005.

This paper discusses several selected topics concerning governance in Indonesia: 60 years after independence a daunting array of key governance issues remain unsettled. The rules of the game of public life and governance remain unclear in many important areas. The result is that the scope for disagreements between powerful actors and institutions remains very wide and many Indonesians frequently comment that public life in Indonesia is kacau (confused).

Update 11 April 2006

A condensed version of this paper was published in April 2006 in English and Bahasa Indonesia as an ADBI Policy Brief.
