Microfinance in Pakistan: A Poverty Impact Study of the Khushhali BankBackgroundADBI was invited by ADB to conduct an independent impact study of the poverty impact of the Khushhali Bank, a retail microfinance institution operating in Pakistan. To address this question, data on broad measures of poverty - including not just economic measures of poverty like income and assets, but social indicators such as education, health, and empowerment as well - were collected by an international survey company for over 2,000 households in rural and urban areas across all provinces of Pakistan. Taking advantage of the rapid expansion of microfinance in Pakistan, the study addresses the issues of bias and endogeneity through careful sample design that includes new clients that have been selected and approved to receive loans, but have not actually accessed them yet. The survey was administered in the first half of 2005 and results were available at the end of July. Preliminary results of the study, Meeting the Double Bottom Line - The Impact of Kushhali Bank’s Microfinance Program on Poverty Reduction in Pakistan will be presented in Islamabad on Wednesday 28 September. This study was originally presented as a draft at this seminar. It has now been revised and published as a monograph on 28 November 2005. How to ApplyBy invitation only LanguageEnglish
