Microfinance Today and the Private Sector's Role in its Future Development
Post-event Statement
This symposium was successfully held in collaboration with PlaNet Finance Japan, the JICA Institute for International Cooperation, the JBIC Institute for Development Finance, the Koei Research Institute and the World Bank, Tokyo Office. It was attended by over 240 participants, including representatives of government and donor agencies, members of the business community, microfinance practitioners and academics. Participants exchanged experiences and perspectives on private sector involvement in microfinance and discussed future roles for the public and private sectors in the growing microfinance industry. ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the Bank’s “strong commitment to build inclusive financial systems in the region,” while PlaNet Finance President Jacques Attali stressed that “Japan’s technology and human resources will be a critical factor in the next stage of the sector’s development.” Presentation materials are available online. |
Purpose
This conference will highlight the central role played by the private sector in the growth and success of microfinance, and will facilitate discussion on the role governments play to support private sector involvement in microfinance. It will bring together donors, global leaders in microfinance, specialists and practitioners in the field, and key thinkers in Japan to discuss the future of microfinance as a tool for fighting poverty, its sustainability, and the role Japan can play.
Objectives
The goals of this conference are to: - Demonstrate the growth and success of the microfinance movement and the central role the private sector is playing in that process
- Create a platform to discuss the role governments can play in enhancing private sector involvement in microfinance, and
- Identify directions for future research and possible funding sources
Outputs
- Output 1. Enhanced awareness in Japan's private sector and among Japanese policy makers of the role of the private sector in the field of microfinance and how government can support their involvement.
- Output 2. New directions for research on microfinance and possible areas for collaboration identified.
Participants
The conference is open to all interested colleagues working in microfinance in Japan. The target audiences are: - Japanese private sector – financial institutions, large corporations, owner-managed corporations and CSR friendly companies
- Japanese policy makers - Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Ministry of Finance
- Development community in Tokyo – staff of donor agencies, development consultants and NGOs
