The workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region, held 17-22 November 2008 in Brisbane, Australia, brought together more than 20 mid-level and senior-level government officials from the Pacific Region who are responsible for infrastructure, policy-making and infrastructure project design and implementation. Delegates from Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu attended the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region, held 17-22 November 2008 in Brisbane, Australia. The highly interactive six-day program integrated topical presentations made by experienced PPP technical advisors, open panel discussions and facilitated group sessions on critical PPP policy and design issues. Michael Regan, Associate Professor of Infrastructure, Mirvac School of Sustainable Development at Bond University, delivered welcome remarks at the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region, where he stressed the significant role that infrastructure plays in economic development and the importance of infrastructure delivery and PPPs as a procurement method for the Pacific Region. Elaine Glennie, Senior Capacity Building Specialist at ADBI, delivered opening remarks at the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region, which brought together a diverse group of leading PPP experts from the investment banking, finance, legal and technical fields to share their experience in PPPs across infrastructure sectors. She outlined the benefits and challenges offered by greater private sector participation and financing of infrastructure projects, particularly given the challenges that small island states face.
Delegates from the Pacific region listened to a presentation on Bankable Deals for PPPs: What Does It Take to Get Deals Through, given by Bill Banks, Oceania Leader at Ernst & Young Australia, followed by a panel discussion, during the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region. Mid-level and senior-level government officials from the Pacific Region discussed Meeting the Financing Gap: Assessing Sector Financing Strategies and Prioritizing Sector Issues and Challenges for the social sub-sectors (health and education), during the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region. Mid-level and senior-level government officials from the Pacific Region discussed Prioritizing Issues and Challenges for Private Sector Investment and PPPs in Infrastructure for the transport sub-sector in a group session facilitated by Kylee Anastasi, Associate Director, Project Finance Advisory at Ernst & Young Australia, during the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region. Delegates attended a welcome dinner hosted by ADBI at the Bond University campus, during the workshop on Strengthening Private Sector Participation for Infrastructure in the Pacific Region.
