The Regional Workshop on Developing Partnerships for Water and Climate Change Adaptation

Share

Background

Extreme weather conditions, for example, floods, droughts and sea level rise have become more common in the Asia-Pacific region recently. These are attributed to the deep impact of climate changes on water. Especially, developing countries are vulnerable to the negative impact of climate changes. More analysis and dissemination is urgently needed on the potential impacts of climate change on water resources. And also we have to consider how organizations can adapt their water management strategies and activities. Similarly, climate change projections at the river basin level are needed to assess the impact on social and economic sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, bio-diversity, coastal and marine resources, water resources, public health and energy. We need better partnerships between governments, experts, project managers and funding agencies can help to plan and implement adaptation work efficiently.

From these backgrounds, NARBO considered climate change adaptation as a priority topic and provided this for Action Plan 2008-2009. On the other hand, Center of River Basin Organization and Management (CRBOM) and National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) are the Asia-Pacific Water Forum’s water knowledge hub for river basin organizations and management and climate change adaptation for Southeast Asia, respectively. So we have agreed to carry out workshop on climate change that aims to develop strategies and a regional action plan for climate change adaptation. Then based on the action plan and for enhancing it, we NARBO plan to have series workshop on this theme in 2009.
