5th NARBO IWRM Training - Keys for Success with Integrated Water Resources ManagementBackgroundThe Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO) was officially established in February 2004 to promote integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Asia monsoon region. The goal of NARBO is to help achieve IWRM in river basins throughout Asia with practical actions. NARBO’s objective is to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of River Basin Organizations (RBOs) in promoting IWRM and improving water governance, through training and exchange of information and experiences among RBOs, water-related government agencies and other knowledge partners. Previous training workshops were held in Thailand (2004), Sri Lanka (2005), Korea (2005), and Sri Lanka (2006). This time, NARBO secretariat has chosen the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin in Viet Nam for training, because this river basin has good examples for case studies such as hydropower, conservation of river basins, water quality, and coastal management. The International Water Center (IWC) in Australia is directing this training. Case studies will be used as practical examples throughout the training program. ObjectivesThe objectives of this training are to develop capacity of NARBO member staff in understanding and implementing IWRM in their respective river basins through lectures of IWRM concepts and case studies, IWRM group work, and sharing country challenges and strategies.
