Conference on Recent Exchange Rate Movements and Policy Issues
Background
Sustained economic growth can contribute significantly to poverty reduction. Indeed, countries that have enjoyed economic growth for long periods of time have witnessed marked declines in poverty incidence. Given the importance of trade for economic development in Asia, the role of foreign change rates and exchange rate management is also very important. Both inappropriate levels and excessive volatility of exchange rates can damage prospects for trade and economic growth. The current global financial and economic crisis puts further strains on trade, exchange rates and economic growth overall, which increases the importance of this kind of study. This conference will focus on issues related to the impact of exchange rates on trade in Asia.
Objectives
The conference will review evidence and analysis of the effects of exchange rate levels on trade in Asia. The three main areas included in this conference are: - Analysis of changes in the fundamental outlook for the US dollar as a result of the current global financial and economic crisis;

- Analysis of the effects of exchange rates on labor-intensive manufacturing exports in China
