Conference on Global Financial Crisis: SMEs and Trade Finance Impacts

Objectives

The conference will review evidence and analysis of the impacts of the global economic and financial crisis on SMEs and trade finance in Asian countries, with the aim of setting up a reference basis for subsequent conferences dealing with appropriate policy responses in the region. The two main areas included in this conference are:

  • SMEs: Lessons from previous crises, including policy responses, and a preliminary assessment of likely impacts from the current global crisis. The focus will be on four regions: China, E. Asia excluding China, South Asia and Central Asia.
  • Trade finance: Lessons from previous crises, including impacts and policy responses. The findings will include those for both Asian and non-Asian countries, including, e.g., Europe and Latin America.

This activity is part of the global financial crisis project, which has a crosscutting theme. It is hoped that this activity will be able to identify and recommend regional cooperation initiatives that can support efforts of DMCs to support SMEs and trade finance in order to achieve sustainable growth in the face of these global economic and financial shocks. The work will also feed into later conferences on social impacts and financial reform and regulation.
