Background

NARBO was officially established in February 2004 to promote integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Asia Monsoon region. The goal of NARBO is to help achieve IWRM in river basins throughout Asia with practical actions. Also, NARBO's objective is to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of River Basin Organizations (RBOs) in promoting IWRM and improving water governance, through training and exchange of information and experiences among RBOs, water-related government agencies and other knowledge partners. To date, five IWRM training workshops have been conducted in Thailand (2004), Sri Lanka (2005), Korea (2005), Sri Lanka (2006), and Viet Nam (2009).

This time, NARBO secretariat once again chose the Vu Gia–Thu Bon river basin in Viet Nam for training, because this river basin has good examples for case studies such as hydropower and conservation of the river basin. The 6th IWRM training will build on the materials and the results of the 5th IWRM training which was conducted in February 2009. It will also discuss the application of the IWRM Guidelines which were officially introduced at the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul in March 2009.
