Background

Asia is at a crossroads. Robust economic growth over the past decade has lifted millions of people out of poverty, but has also driven resource and energy consumption to unsustainable levels. At the same time, given the economic malaise in the West where final demand has traditionally come from, Asian countries have had to turn to their neighbors and within to generate demand.

The joint Overseas Development Institute and ADBI event on inclusive green growth and regional cooperation in Asia will cover several pertinent issues facing Asia today:

  • how Asia can adapt to the low-carbon, green growth strategy while reducing poverty and increasing productivity and growth; and
  • how policymakers in Asia can successfully create the necessary conditions to raise private consumption and investment spending in the region so as to rebalance their economies from the predominantly export-led growth that is dependent on Western markets, to a more balanced regional and domestic led growth.

The key findings from the ADBI publication, "Low-Carbon Green Growth in Asia: Policies and Practices," will also be showcased at this event.
