Integrated Water Resource Management Course - 2005
Post-event Statement
Twenty seven participants from 6 countries attended this course held 25-29 April 2005 in Negombo, Sri Lanka. It was organized by the International Water Resources Institute, ADB, ADB Institute, Japan Water Agency, GWP-South Asia and Lanka Jalani. The workshop included four group sessions and one-day field visit to the Maha Oya basin. Papers and presentations are available on ADB's web site. |
Background
One of the targets set by the World Summit on Sustainable Development is for all countries to put in place an integrated water resource management (IWRM) approach for managing their water by 2005. Recognizing the need for networking and capacity building in the implementation of IWRM, the Japan Water Agency, the Asian Development Bank, and ADBI decided at the 3rd World Water Forum in March 2003 in Kyoto, Japan, to collaborate in launching the Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO), and a letter of intent was signed at the Forum on 21 March 2003. NARBO aims to achieve IWRM in river basins throughout Asia. As a result, the first NARBO training course was held in Thailand in July 2004 to exchange information and experience on participatory IWRM.
Objectives
The workshop aims to : - To disseminate the basic principles and instruments of IWRM
- To facilitate the process of integrating IWRM into the management procedure of river basin organizations (RBOs)
- To share best practices of establishing and operating RBOs
- To build capacity for the management of RBOs in Asia
Outputs
- 30-40 trained government officials responsible for integrated river basin water resources management
- Knowledge network among the participants to share experiences in IWRM
- Summary of proceedings
- CD-ROM to disseminate the outputs of the course
Participants
Middle- to senior-level government officials in the DMCs who are directly involved in IWRM
Language
English (No interpretation will be provided)
Responsibilities
Each participant will be required to submit a country report. In addition, participants will make a field trip to a RBO in Sri Lanka and prepare a group presentations based on the field trip and group discussions during the course.
