Great East Japan Earthquake

The earthquake that hit Japan on 11 March 2011 was the strongest in the country's recorded history. The extensive damage and loss of life from the Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami will have numerous policy implications, with economic, social, business, and psychological dimensions.

On this page, ADBI plans to build a collection of studies that will analyze the disaster from a policy-making perspective. This effort begins with a recognition that recovery from disasters tends to develop over broad stages, each with their own challenges for national, regional, and local decision makers.

Over the months and years ahead, ADBI aims to provide analysis of the Great East Japan Earthquake that will be valuable not only for policy makers in Japan, but also for those charged with disaster management in other countries. It will also examine the economic implications of the disaster for Japan, the Asia and Pacific region, and the world.
