Frequently Asked Questions - Other Questions
What is the objective of the awards?
One of the key aims of the program is to recognize, and provide support for, efforts made by Asia-Pacific print journalists from developing countries who provide high-quality, balanced coverage of local issues affecting growth and development in the region.
This is seen as an important step towards encouraging good governance and good policy-making in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Will ADBI consider training programs for journalists in the future?
Yes. ADBI supports a capacity building and training program in Tokyo. If there is sufficient interest from media organisations across the Asia-Pacific region, ADBI will consider starting a short-course for journalists from regional developing countries.
Who will the judges be? Will they be professional and independent?
ADBI is very pleased to announce that the three judges are Yoshio Murakami, Adviser on International Affairs to The Asahi Shinbun, Suvendrini Kakuchi, reporting for Inter Press Service and a frequent commentator on Asian issues for Japanese publications and television, and presiding judge Anthony Rowley, Tokyo Correspondent of The Business Times and Field Editor for Oxford Analytica. Meet the judges.
The judges are independent of ADB and the Institute in making their awards.
Where and when will the awards ceremony be held?
The first awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday 7 April, 2004, at The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo. ADBI will pay finalists fares and accommodation costs.
