Role of Key Emerging Economies—ASEAN, the People's Republic of China (PRC), and India—for a Balanced, Sustainable, and Resilient Asia

The major emerging economies of Asia—ASEAN, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and India—are major economic drivers of Asia and the world, given their roles in trade, investment and capital flows; the size of their economies; and their rapid economic growth. As they continue to expand, they need to ensure that their growth is consistent with environmental management and improvements to the quality of life. ASEAN, the PRC and India will also need to strengthen ties among themselves, with the other countries in the region, and with the rest of the world to foster peaceful, harmonious and equitable relationships.

There is a lack of studies that focus on a medium-term forward-looking analysis of the prospects and challenges for, and relations among, large and competing emerging Asian economies, in particular ASEAN as an integrated economy, the PRC and India. This flagship project will address the appropriate policy and strategy frameworks at national, subregional and regional levels to address the major issues and challenges faced by these economies, particularly through regional cooperation and integration.

This is a joint study by ADBI and ADB carried out in close cooperation with national think tanks.

Objectives

To inform the global research and policy community about (i) trends, major drivers of growth, and policy and reforms in ASEAN, the PRC and India; (ii) the major issues, prospects and challenges facing them; and (iii) areas for cooperation and integration to address these challenges; and

To provide policymakers in these economies with the appropriate medium- to long-term policy and strategy frameworks (at national, subregional, and regional levels) to maximize the potential of ASEAN, the PRC and India by fostering further integration and cooperation.

The study period is from 2011 to 2030. As a component of this study, a detailed study on ASEAN 2030 will look beyond the targeted creation of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

The study will also benefit from a joint study by ADBI and the Peterson Institute on "The Implications of the rise of ACI for the World Economy".
