Awards for Asian Journalists Reporting on Development

The Asian Development Bank Institute has today announced the "Developing Asia Journalism Awards" to acknowledge print journalists in Asia who cover development trends and the impact these have on countries and people in the Asia-Pacific region. The awards, which are a major new initiative of ADBI’s public affairs outreach, will focus on excellence in journalistic reporting in six strategic areas of development.

"The purpose of the awards is to publicly recognize the efforts made by Asian journalists from developing countries, who provide high-quality, balanced coverage of the real issues affecting growth and development," according to Peter McCawley, Dean of the ADBI, who was speaking at the official launch held in the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan.

Awards will be based on the journalist’s published works (including in translation) for the period 2001 to 2003. Winners will be selected by a distinguished jury, including practicing journalists, and awards will be made at a ceremony in Tokyo in the first half of 2004.
