Governance

Updated 27 June 2008

Governance is a wide concept that is often loosely defined. In its research activities, ADBI has given special attention to corporate governance questions, principally in East Asia. This is because poor corporate governance, as ADBI's earlier research has confirmed, was widely believed to be one of the main causes of the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998. Our ongoing governance projects are listed below. See the online catalog for our governance publications.

  1. Asia's Infrastructure Challenges: Issues of Institutional Capacity

This study examines the current state of institutional structures across Asia (concentrating on East Asia) to determine the ability of these economies to engage in efficient infrastructure investment policy such as public-private partnerships in the funding of future transport infrastructure needs. It will attempt to answer the following questions: What are the institutional mechanisms needed to be put in place for Asia to develop a successful public private partnership program? How far do the various regional governments have to go? To what extent do transnational issues come into play? If so, then is there room for a supranational infrastructure investment board to provide a mechanism for good governance for infrastructure projects?
