Pakistan Institute of Development Economics

Pakistan Institute of Development Economics * was established at Karachi in 1957 and in 1964 accorded the status of an autonomous research organization by the Government of Pakistan. It is devoted to theoretical and empirical research in Development Economics in general and on Pakistan-related economic issues in particular. In addition to providing a firm academic basis to economic policy-making, its research also provides a window through which the outside world can view the nature and direction of economic research in Pakistan.

Vision: A research and teaching institute generating quality research and knowledge for informed policy development and debate.

Mission: To develop a professional and domestically owned research agenda and dialogue based on global knowledge and standards.

Area of Main Strategic Focus
Governance and Institutions, Growth Strategy, Domestic Commerce, Cities as Engine of Growth, Markets and Regulation, Regionalism and Growth, Industry, Agriculture, Poverty and Income Distribution, Demographic Issues, and Human Development.

Why These Core Areas have been Chosen?
These core areas have been chosen in view of the research needs in the country, research capacity of the institute and challenges ahead e.g. improvement in governance, effectiveness of decentralization and devolution, sustainability in growth, poverty reduction, demographic changes, city growth and urbanization.
