Peter McCawley
Former Dean, ADBI, 2003 - 2006

Brief Biography

Peter McCawley graduated from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra with a PhD in economics in 1972. He subsequently taught for several years at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, before returning to ANU and conducting research work on Indonesia. He joined AusAID, Australia's government aid agency, in 1986 as a Deputy Director General and later took up a position as an Executive Director at the Asian Development Bank from 1992-1996. He has worked as an economic adviser to ministers of economics and finance in both Australia and Indonesia.

He has published extensively on Asian economic affairs, especially on issues concerning the Indonesian economy. He has also served in numerous economic advisory positions, including on a government-appointed major review of Australia's foreign aid policy (in 1984) and in various multilateral agencies. He was Co-Chair of ADB's Asian Development Fund (ADF) VIII international negotiations in 1999-2000 and Vice-Chair of the ADF IX negotiations in 2003-04.
